Project MUSE对期刊严格臻选，所收录的期刊必须是同行评审期刊，是由非赢利性或学协会出版社出版。此外，还会考虑其在学科领域的排名、影响因子与图书馆员建议等。其期刊文献的被引用频率很高，并被多个广泛使用的数据库平台索引。
数据库提供全文文献、评论（书籍、表演、艺术、音乐等）、小说与诗歌、可缩放的图表与照片，大部分文献可同时提供HTML 与PDF 两种全文格式。在检索结果及文献浏览页面，可以保存文献的引文信息，直接导出到EndNote文献管理软件。保存的指定格式包含APA格式（主要用于心理学和社会学研究领域）、MLA格式（主要用于语言、文学和艺术研究领域）、Chicago格式（主要用于历史学科研究领域）等。
